What this means is – I personally imagine it’s my guitar to take on the road and finish and adjust it so it plays like any top-of-the-line $2000 model.
How?.. this involves making several adjustments to the nut, bridge (rod if necessary though not usually), the neck and fret finish to make it super-playable and last but most importantly the intonation. Intonation?.. yep – this is the tuning up and down the neck. It’s one thing for the guitar to play in tune at the tuning end – but it’s another for it to still be in tune when you bar chord at the twelfth fret and it not sound like a bag of nails and not ‘fight itself’! This is done with my secret KFC recipe – no sorry – my secret means to take intonation to a new level of perfection using more than an oscilloscope.
So once this is done you really can have a guitar that cost a few hundred quid that plays like one finished and setup in a custom shop and cost a few thousand! Surely not? Yes surely – because there is a fair amount of BS around guitar ‘sound’ – that holy grail of tone. Sure – some people get an awesome tone but they don’t usually get it by spending more and more. It’s a bit like trying to get the ‘perfect’ HiFi sound for pure sound – without taking into account that the track you like was mixed in a studio and subject to all kinds of sound altering filters before it was sent to the shops! Spending more – or getting good equipment can however make the listening experience more fun – simply because a transistor radio will always sound less pleasing to the ear than nice large speakers:)
